Day 1 in Japan
We’re moving at an astonishing on the Shinkensen. And connected to wi-fi. It’s actually day 2 but I have to begin at the beginning.
It’s not often that you can sit around all day eating and watching movies but that’s what we did. Guilt free. What else could you do? Even though we were in Business Class it’s not what you’d call a comfy fit, but eternally grateful we weren’t in cattle class. So, 21 Jump Street, The Hurt Locker, 2 meals and multiple toilet breaks later, we landed in Japan.
It’s like all the customs procedures around the world were made from the same blueprint. The heat and the smells are what identifies one country from another. Standing in line thousands of miles from home, I recognise a face. About 30 minutes of trying access the database in my travel weary, sleep deprived mind, I summons the courage to talk to the guy. ‘Are you James Muller?’ Stunned, he said yes, slightly put off by being accosted by this guy in the customs room in Osaka. After a couple minutes of banter and pleasantries talking to one of Australia’s pre-eminent world class guitarists, we wondered off. I just wish I got him to sign my Guitelele. More about that later.
We’ve discovered our favourite beer in the bar of our hotel, the New Hankyu. Kirin Stout, a real winner.
Our quest for food began about 10pm local time. We probably did the same lap of the hotel via train station about 4 times and with no chance in hell of finding the Yakatori bar suggested to us by our helpful waitress. At about 11:30 we stumbled across the Japanese equivalent of ‘Pork’r’us’. Full of locals, we sat down to meals that we pointed at in plastic reproductions sitting in the window. Hardly appetitising. Yet the food was delicious. I then went to pay for the meal by offering them $650, and asking Leon for even more money, for a meal that was actually $60. The boys are still laughing about that one.

The guy in the picture above is named Bill Flora, and according to the caption accompanying his smiling face from this CNET article, Bill’s a key leader on the team that created the Metro interface that Microsoft will be using for all desktops, laptops and tablets running Windows 8.
Looks like a nice guy, right? Now take a look at Bill’s work desk, and notice that he is designing Windows 8 using exclusively Apple products, including an Apple Cinema Display, a MacBook Pro, an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and what appears to be a Magic Mouse.
Good taste in hardware, Bill! Windows 8… good enough to be designed on a Mac. Hey, that should be Microsoft’s new tagline!
[Thanks for the tip, Paul!]
Update: Apparently Bill is no longer with Microsoft. Here’s hoping Apple snatched him up!
